Here’s Why Netflix Series ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ Is Facing Backlash

While several users criticized the Netflix series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, some chimed in to praise the series

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was recently released on Netflix and it’s already facing massive backlash. Several viewers have taken to social media and criticised the show. While the 10 episodes limited series quickly hit Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched series chart in several countries, many viewers questioned whether it glorifies the murders.

Along with the social media critics, some of the families of the real-life victims also shared their thoughts. One viewer tweeted, “I’m nearly done with the Jeffrey Dahmer [show] on Netflix and I just need to know why they continue to humanise and even victimise these murderers, every single time???”

Moreover, Eric Perry, a cousin of Jeffrey Dahmer victim Errol Lindsey, also took to Twitter and wrote, “I’m not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge rn. But if you’re actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbells) are pissed about this show. It’s retraumatizing [sic] over and over again, and for what? How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need?”

Another Twitter user added, “This show does nothing to center/honor victims and only re-traumatizes and makes clearly racially motivated killings our ‘entertainment.’ I’m loving the performance by Niecy Nash and law enforcement critiques throughout but don’t think I can continue watching.”

While a few users criticized the Netflix series, some chimed in to praise the series. One user wrote, “None of Jeff Dahmer’s victims deserved to die but the episode on Tony Hugh just makes me weep. I loved Tony’s confidence and ambition. I knew he killed him but I hoped he’d spare his life in the series. This series shows how race plays a role in crime.”

Another Tweeted, “Watching the #DahmerNetflix series should remind everyone that Jeff Dahmer was a monster that was overlooked time and time again. Evan Peters embodied how sinister Dahmer was and not glorifying him. Remember the reality of the crimes, racism, injustice of the system, victims etc.”

For the unversed, Jeffrey Dahmer (serial killer), who was also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, was responsible for the murder of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. His gruesome crimes involved dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism, with the Netflix show revealing the heinous methods he used during the murders.
