Morfydd Clark Opens Up About Handling Fan Backlash Over ‘Rings of Power’ Role

The Actress Addresses Online Criticism and Shares Her Thoughts on Playing Galadriel

Morfydd Clark, star of Amazon’s The Rings of Power, has spoken out about the unexpected fan backlash she faced after taking on the iconic role of Galadriel. In a recent interview, Clark revealed that she was “totally unprepared” for the wave of negative comments from fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original works and Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film series.

Clark, who plays a younger version of the powerful elf Galadriel in the Amazon series, shared that while she knew stepping into such a beloved universe would come with challenges, the intensity of the criticism caught her off guard. The actress shared that she was unprepared for the volume and the vitriol of the response during the release of the show. The actress revealed that most of the hatred came from men.

The Rings of Power series, which premiered in September 2022, has been one of history’s most ambitious and expensive television projects. Despite its success, the show faced a mixed reception from fans, particularly regarding character portrayals and story choices. Clark’s portrayal of Galadriel, a character originally portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Jackson’s trilogy, was met with praise and criticism, with some fans expressing disappointment over perceived deviations from Tolkien’s original depiction.

Despite the initial negative reactions, Clark also highlighted the overwhelming support she has received from a segment of the fanbase. “She takes up space; she’s unapologetic. I didn’t want her to act like a human woman who’s been taught not to be abrasive,” she told Elle. Clarke mentioned that some people didn’t like her character, while others enjoyed watching her.

As the Rings of Power continues to unfold, Clark remains focused on her portrayal of Galadriel and is determined to bring justice to the character. Her co-stars and the production team have also rallied around her, praising her portrayal and dedication to the role. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have defended their creative choices, stating their commitment to exploring new aspects of Middle-earth’s vast lore while staying true to its spirit.

The Rings of Power season 2 is scheduled to be released on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday. With more seasons and episodes to come, The Rings of Power and its cast are set to further explore the rich tapestry of Middle-earth, aiming to win over both old and new fans alike.
