Kourtney Kardashian offered a lovely message for her grandmother Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon, who turned 88 on Tuesday, July 26. Kourtney, 43, shared a slew of previously unseen photographs from her May courthouse wedding to Travis Barker, 46, while thanking MJ for being one of the few people in attendance as they said their ‘I do’s.’
MJ was there to support her granddaughter, as well as to display Travis and Kourtney in their separate black and white costumes during their wedding ceremony in Santa Barbara. Kris Jenner’s mother, MJ, wore an all-black ensemble that included a turtleneck under a blazer and dangling pearl necklaces. In another shot, they can be seen leaving the ceremony and walking to a restaurant, where they raise champagne glasses together. Randy, Travis’ father, was also present, dressed in a grey suit.
Kourtney wished her a happy birthday and expressed her gratitude for being able to attend her and Travis’ special day. “My special, sweet, chic, sophisticated, smart and most wonderful grandmother. Happy birthday my MJ,” she captioned the pictures. “So happy you could be one of the only two guests we had when we were legally married, I will always remember this day and night with you.”
Travis and Kourtney shared a few photographs from their courthouse wedding on Instagram after saying their “I do’s” in the ceremony. The two were seen with MJ and Randy in one of the black-and-white images as they were ready to leave in their classic Cadillac convertible. Even though the pair eventually had a lavish wedding ceremony in Italy attended by friends and family, a family insider revealed to HollywoodLife why Kourtney wanted MJ to be present at the California ceremony.
“When Kourtney wanted to have this wedding to make it official, MJ was the one she went to for advice. She wanted it super small and intimate and told MJ that she only wanted her there,” the insider revealed. Another source said that after being away from the family for such a long period due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it was crucial that her grandmother was present at her wedding. They said, “Now that she’s been out of isolation, Kourtney knew she wanted MJ to play a special role in her life.”
