Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney, two of Hollywood’s most prominent comedians, will not be hosting the 2024 Oscars, according to recent reports. Despite speculations, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that neither Kimmel nor Mulaney will take on the coveted role this year.
The news comes as the Academy continues its search for a host who can bring both charisma and wit to the prestigious event. Kimmel, who previously hosted the Oscars twice, including last year, was approached to host the awards but he let it go. His prior stints were well-received, particularly for his handling of the infamous Best Picture mix-up in 2017. Jimmy Kimmel’s statement upon accepting the Oscar hosting offer last year included that he dreamt of hosting the event “exactly four times.”
John Mulaney, known for his sharp comedic style and successful stand-up specials, was another favourite among fans. His experience hosting Saturday Night Live and various comedy specials had positioned him as a fresh and exciting choice. However, it appears that Mulaney is focusing on other projects, leaving him unavailable for the Oscars gig. When Mulaney was asked by The Hollywood Reporter, if he would like to host the Oscars, the comedian’s reply was “Sure, why not?”
The search for the perfect host continues to be a challenging task for the Academy. In recent years, the Oscars have experimented with different formats, including a host-less ceremony in 2019, which received mixed reviews. The return of a traditional host is seen as a move to bring back some of the classic elements that audiences love, including monologues filled with sharp humour and heartfelt moments.
The Academy Awards are set to air on Sunday, March 2, 2025, promising an evening of glamour, celebration, and cinematic achievement. The announcement of the host is expected to come soon, adding to the excitement surrounding one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.
