On Thursday, November 11, John Aniston died at the age of 89. On Monday, November 14, his daughter Jennifer Aniston lamented his death with a series of images of the two of them over the years on Instagram. Jen captioned a beautiful tribute to her “sweet papa.” “You were one of the most beautiful humans I ever knew. I am so grateful that you went soaring into the heavens in peace – and without pain,” she wrote.
Jennifer went on to say how she will carry the day of his death with her forever. “And on 11/11 no less! You always had perfect timing. That number will forever hold an even greater meaning for me now,” she wrote. “I’ll love you till the end of time. Don’t forget to visit.”
The actor was a TV industry veteran, having performed in a variety of series throughout the course of his 60-year career. Aside from his acting ability, John was well-known for being Aniston’s father. He’s survived by his daughter, son Alexander and his stepson John Melick.
John was born in Greece and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of two. He started his acting career in 1962 with a one-off part in the television series 87th Precinct after graduating from Penn State with a degree in theatrical arts. Throughout the 1960s, he kept making appearances on numerous programs and soap operas, but it wasn’t until 1970 that he earned his longest-running role.
In the well-known soap opera Days of Our Lives, he was chosen to play Dr. Eric Richards. Only a few episodes of the show featured him in 1970, but he returned in 1985 when he was cast as Victor Kiriakis, and he became a mainstay of the program until 2022. He’s given credit for more than 3,000 episodes.
John was featured in a number of other notable TV shows outside of Days of Our Lives, including episodes of The West Wing, Gilmore Girls, and Mad Men. However, his performance in the soap opera is what has garnered him the greatest acclaim. For his work on Days of Our Lives, he has received three Soap Opera Digest awards. He was also nominated for an Emmy lifetime achievement award in 2022, according to IMDb, and for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 2017 Daytime Emmys.
John married the late actress Nancy Dow in 1965 outside of the performing world. He took on the role of John’s stepfather. John was Nancy’s son from her previous marriage to Jack Melick. The couple had Jennifer Aniston, a very accomplished actress in her own right, as their daughter. After divorcing in 1980, John married Sherry Rooney, his second wife, in 1984. The couple had one son, Alexander. Nancy died in 2016 at the age of 79.
