Jennifer Aniston recently talked about the change in comedy from the time Friends was being aired. While promoting her upcoming movie, Murder Mystery 2, Aniston said that comedy is more complicated today than it used to be.
“Now it’s a bit complicated because you have to be very careful, which makes it very difficult for comedians because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, we make fun of life”, she told AFP. She continued, “You could joke and laugh at a fan, it was hysterical. And it was about educating people about how ridiculous people are. And now we can’t do that anymore.” (Hollywood Reporter)

Jennifer Aniston then shifted her focus to Friends specifically, noting that when the show aired in the 1990s, it was funny and people overlooked some of the sitcom’s potentially more controversial takes. “There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who now come back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive,” he said. “There were things that were never intended, and other things … well, we should have thought about it, but I don’t think there’s a sensitivity like there is now.” (Hollywood reporter)
Aniston also told the news outlet it was a tragedy that comedy sensibilities could be the reason there has been less comedy in recent years than there used to be. In recent years, Friends has been criticized for starring six white actors and minimalist actors of color, most of whom only had guest appearances.
