James Cameron to Direct ‘Ghosts of Hiroshima’ After the Avatar Franchise

Legendary filmmaker to take on a project, highlighting the aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing.

James Cameron, the iconic director behind the Titanic and Avatar franchise, is set to direct Ghosts of Hiroshima, a thought-provoking film centred on the harrowing events of World War II. The film will be an adaptation of author Charles Pellegrino’s upcoming book by the same name from Blackstone Publishing in August 2025. The book can be called a sequel to Pellegrino’s 2015 book Last Train From Hiroshima, which will also serve as the basis of the film.

Based on the true story the plot will revolve around a 29-year-old engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who is recognized as the only survivor of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. The project, which explores the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, has already garnered significant attention due to its emotionally charged subject matter and Cameron’s acclaimed directorial skills.

“I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just days before he died. He was in the hospital. He was handing the baton of his personal story to us, so I had to do it. I can’t turn away from it,” James Cameron said in his statement. “It’s a subject that I’ve wanted to do a film about, that I’ve been wrestling with how to do it, over the years,” Cameron added to his statement. This project marks a departure from Cameron’s recent science-fiction endeavours, such as the Avatar series, and signals his return to the historical drama genre, where he has previously excelled. Ghosts of Hiroshima is on Cameron’s list after he finishes making the Avatar franchise. James Cameron is one of the top directors in the world known for making the incredible Terminator franchise and Aliens, and he is popularly known for making the highest-grossing movies in the world: Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water. The upcoming World War II feature film would mark his first non-Avatar film since Titanic, which was released in 1997. His upcoming film Avatar: Fire & Ash, is set to be released in  December 2025, and has two more Avatar films on the list.
