House Of The Dragon Season 2 In Works, Epic Battle Tease Coming Through

There has been no release date for the second season, but it's likely the show will return in 2024 and will contain 8 episodes.

Filming for season 2 of House of the Dragon is underway. HBO’s fantasy hit has resumed production at Leavesden Studios in the UK. “The House of Dragons has returned,” showrunner Ryan Condal said in a statement. “We are excited to return to shooting with members of our original family as well as new talent on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon conspire at the council tables, marching their armies and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.”(Hollywood Reporter)

This “new talent” also includes Emmy-winning executive producer-director Alan Taylor, whose work on Game of Thrones was instrumental in setting the directional tone of the series. Taylor, who most recently directed the pilot for AMC’s acclaimed series Interview with the Vampire, joined after Miguel Sapochnik, co-showrunner, and director of House of the Dragon’s first season, resigned.

There has been no release date for the second season, but it’s likely the show will return in 2024. According to HBO, the first season averaged at least 29 million viewers per episode, more than all but the last two seasons of Game of Thrones. Based on executive producer George R.R. Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Martin tells the story of House Targaryens.

A source from the series confirmed to Deadline that Season 2 will contain 8 episodes, stressing that the cut in the number of episodes was based on the story.

Earlier, the House of the Dragon creative team planned to run the series for three or four seasons. The writer and executive producer took a step back in preparing for Season 2 to take an overview of the series that follows Martin’s Fire and Blood and outlines the overall narrative flow, including how the stories are broken down from season to season and the battles to be included.

Rumors are that Season 3 has been planned and could get the green light, with HBO seriously considering committing to moving forward with scripts, casting, and a production schedule is also trying to think long-term term rather than a season-to-season.
Since some of the storyline originally slated for Season 2, including a major fight, has been pushed back into Season 3, rumors are that the show is now closer to 4 seasons which would be optimal to tell the full story.
