Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello officially announced their breakup on November 17, while stating that they were ending their 2-year relationship on good terms.
Meanwhile, according to a source close to the former Fifth Harmony performer told E! News that Shawn “initiated the conversation” with Camila about breaking up last week. And while the source describes the Cinderella star as being “very upset over the split.”
However, the source noted that Camila was later agreed as it was for the best. “It was really hard for a few days but she has been spending a lot of time with friends and keeping busy,” the source stated. “She has a huge support system and is feeling renewed now.” As difficult as it may have been, the source shares that Camila and Shawn are “still in communication and want to be friends,” adding that it “was not a bad breakup at all.”
Shawn initiated the conversation as the romance between the couple merely fizzled out. Moreover, the source added that the relationship between the two was getting stale and complacent and, they decided they are better off being friends. Camila and Shawn are together since July 2019, shortly after the music video for Senorita dropped. They celebrated their second anniversary this year. Though Shawn and Camila parted their ways, they leave their romance with nothing but the best of memories and a wealth of valuable lessons.

Meanwhile, in October, the Havana singer revealed that she and Shawn were able to help each other with their mental health. She stated Glamour that “for better, for worse,” they’ve learned to be honest with each other about when it’s time to talk to a therapist, describing, “I’ll be venting or ranting about something, and he’ll be like, ‘Have you talked to X about it?’ And I’ll be like, ‘No. I’ve got to do a session.’ And he’ll do the same thing to me.”
However, in the process, Camila helped Shawn with his hesitation to show emotions. The Canadian singer told Dax Shepard that he had a tendency to bottle up his feelings, a habit that only ended thanks to his relationship with Camila. Shawn also mentioned that he is lucky to have Camila, saying, “I’m just lucky to be in a relationship that’s for it.”
