The 77th Golden Globe Awards was a star-studded night that saw climate change talks (especially by Joaquin Phoenix), some drunk speeches, and huge surprises!
Joaquin Phoenix took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his critically acclaimed role in Todd Phillips 2019 masterpiece Joker beating brilliant actors like Antonio Banderas and Adam Driver, while Renee Zellweger won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her brilliant portrayal of late icon Judy Garland.
Sam Mendes bagged 2 Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director beating films like Joker in the best picture category and Martin Scorsese in the best director category to which he said, “There’s not one director in the world who is not in the shadow of Martin Scorsese.”
The star-studded night on Sunday at the Beverly Hills saw a lot of Climate Change talks, especially during Joaquin Phoenix’s acceptance speech in which he pleaded celebrities to stop using “private jets”, a few drunk speeches and a lot of surprises. Brad Pitt gave an epic speech with a special mention to “partner in crime” Leonardo DiCaprio saying he would’ve saved him in Titanic as he won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Russell Crowe won an award for Best Acting award but was notably absent as he is currently in Australia battling the bushfire crisis. Olivia Colman won Best Actress in a Drama Series for The Crown, while Laura Dern was the only winner amongst the many nominations for the critically acclaimed movie Marriage Story. Like Chernobyl and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, Succession bagged two awards during the night. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won Best Motion Picture – comedy or musical and Best Screenplay.
The much hyped-about Game of Thrones’ series only nomination was of Kit Harington in the Best Actor in a Drama TV series category, which he didn’t win, unfortunately.
