On Thursday, Amazon MGM Studios unveiled the first images from the William Goldenberg-directed film. The focus of the movie is on wrestler Anthony Robles (played by Jerome), who, despite being born with one leg, achieved a national championship in 2011 while competing at Arizona State University.
Lopez plays the role of Anthony’s mother Judy, and Bobby Cannavale takes on the character of his father Rick. Michael Peña portrays coach Bobby Williams, and Don Cheadle embodies wrestling coach Shawn Charles in the film’s cast. According to the official synopsis, the film depicts Anthony Robles’ remarkable journey from being born without a right leg to becoming a NCAA Division 1 Champion wrestler, culminating in his victorious national championship win against the very school that had initially rejected him, the powerful Iowa.
The official synopsis of the film states that Anthony Robles, even though he was born without a right leg, achieves the title of NCAA Division 1 Champion wrestler and ultimately triumphs in a national championship against the school that turned him down, the national powerhouse Iowa.
Lopez’s husband Ben Affleck produced Unstoppable through their production company Artists Equity, which he co-owns with Matt Damon. Robles was also a producer on the film and doubled as Jerome’s stunt double, executing the intricate wrestling maneuvers.
William Goldenberg makes his directorial debut with the movie. He previously received an Academy Award for his editing work on Argo in 2013 and has also been nominated for Oscars for his work on The Imitation Game, Zero Dark Thirty, Seabiscuit, and The Insider.
The movie adaptation of the book Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion by Robles and Murphy will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It is scheduled to be released in select theaters in December.
