The highly anticipated biblical epic King of Kings has officially been slated for a theatrical release on Easter 2025, setting the stage for a dramatic retelling of Jesus Christ’s life and ministry. Directed by Seong-ho Jang, this new production aims to offer a fresh and powerful portrayal of one of the most iconic figures in human history. The release timing, scheduled for the April 18-20 weekend, coinciding with the Easter holiday, is seen as a strategic choice, emphasizing the religious significance of the film’s subject matter.
The film is loosely adapted from Charles Dickens’s The Life of Our Lord, a posthumously published short story focusing on the life and times of Jesus Christ. Oscar Isaac voices Jesus and Kenneth Branagh voice stars as Charles Dickens. The additional cast includes Roman Griffin Davis, Ben Kingsley, Uma Thurman, Forest Whitaker, Pierce Brosnan and Mark Hamill.
The film’s logline reads: “The master storyteller engages his youngest son’s vivid imagination with the fascinating life of Jesus, his well-known trials and tribulations, and his notable colleagues and foes.”
Jang, who shares the film’s writing credits with Rob Edwards, promises a compelling narrative that will appeal to both religious and secular audiences. Drawing from the Gospels, the film delves deeply into the teachings, miracles, and crucifixion of Jesus, aiming to present a more personal and intimate portrayal of Christ’s journey. The filmmakers have emphasized their dedication to creating a film that is not only spiritually resonant but also cinematically grand.
The project’s ambition and scale have set high expectations, with reports suggesting that the filmmakers are sparing no expense in creating an immersive and visually stunning experience. Special effects, detailed set designs, and historically accurate costumes will aim to transport audiences to the world of ancient Jerusalem. Mofac Animation, a South Korea-based animation house backs the film while Blue Harbor Entertainment acquires the rights for North America. With King of Kings set for release during one of the holiest times of the Christian calendar, the film is expected to attract widespread attention from both religious audiences and moviegoers interested in historical epics. The Easter 2025 release is expected to be a box office success, marking a significant addition to the genre of faith-based cinema.
