The next film in line in the Star Wars film franchise has been delayed. Rogue Squadron was slated to go into pre-production at the end of 2021 and go into production next year, but the movie has been taken off the production schedule due to scheduling conflicts with director Patty Jenkins, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie had been set to be released on December 22, 2023, but that date will now have to be pushed back. Jenkins is best known for directing Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. She has been working on the development of Rogue Squadron for Lucasfilm with writer Matthew Robinson for more than a year.

However, it is unclear what projects were conflicting with start dates but Jenkins has been attached to Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros. and a Cleopatra feature for Paramount. It is believed that once Jenkins finished her earlier commitments, she will be able to return to the Rogue Squadron project, which will be an entirely new and original story, and not an adaptation of the novel and video game series, according to Jenkins during an IGN interview.

So far Lucasfilm and Disney have not announced any new production and premiere dates for the next Star Wars film. Meanwhile, Jenkins’ involvement with Rogue Squadron was announced at an investor day last year.

Moreover, it was expected to be the first theatrical Star Wars release since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). But that plan is now unclear, considering that there are numerous projects in development, including one from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and another from acclaimed director Taika Waititi, who’s best known for directing Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and its upcoming sequel Thor: Love and Thunder (2020).

Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), is reportedly working on a stand-alone trilogy set within the Star Wars universe. Along with the films, the production company is also busy with the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and Star Wars: Visions, as well as the upcoming release of The Book of Boba Fett in December. There’s also live-action series featuring characters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Cassian Andor, and Ahsoka Tano in the works.
