Britney Spears Is Officially Free From 13 Years Conservatorship

Britney Spears is finally won the freedom to make her own medical, financial, and personal decisions for the first time since 2008.

Britney Spears is free. A Los Angeles judge on Friday ended the conservatorship that has controlled the pop singer’s life and money for more than 13 years. However, the decision followed a remarkable journey that saw Spears from publicly demanding the end of the conservatorship, hire her own attorney, having her father removed from power, and finally win the freedom to make her own medical, financial, and personal decisions for the first time since 2008.

While announcing the remarkable decision, the Los Angeles judge Brenda Penny said, “As of today, the conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated.” Fans gathered outside the courthouse to celebrate the news with cheering and shouting after the decision was announced. The crowd can be heard chanting “Britney! Britney! Britney!” and fans sang and danced to Spears’ song Stronger.

Meanwhile, Spears also tweeted about the decision, writing “Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever — praise the Lord — can I get an Amen???” Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, told fans and reporters that the case “helped shine a light on conservatorships and guardianships from coast to coast, from California to New York. And that took a tremendous amount of insight, courage, and grace.”

However, the judge’s move was widely expected with little support left for prolonging the legal arrangement. Spears did not attend the hearing, moreover, no new arguments were offered at the 30-minute hearing. Britney Spears’ fiancé Sam Asghari also celebrated her freedom. Along with him Cher and Andy Cohen also took to social to celebrate the end of the pop star’s 13-year conservatorship on Friday afternoon.

Sam congratulated his bride-to-be on her freedom after Judge Brenda Penny ruled in her favor to regain control over her own finances, personal life, and medical decisions. The Hot Seat star, 27, shared an Instagram post and wrote, “History was made today. Britney is Free!” adding a pink square with the word ‘Freedom’ in all caps, just minutes after the announcement.”
