Britney Spears Scores First Billboard Top 10 Hit In A Decade With ‘Hold Me Closer’

Britney Spears and Elton John's duet 'Hold Me Closer' was released on August 26, and just a week after its release, the song has already achieved several milestones.

Britney Spears has scored her first top 10 hits in a decade as her single with Elton John debuted at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. The hitmaker’s song Hold Me Closer marked her 14th entry in the top 10. Britney’s most recent Billboard top 10 hits prior to Hold Me Closer was Scream & Shout, her duet with Will.i.am in 2013. Hold Me Closer, a reimagining of Elton’s hits Tiny Dancer and The One was released on August 26 and has also reached number three in the UK.

The duet also shot straight to the top of the iTunes chart in over 40 countries. However, in a recent interview, Elton revealed how he hopes the song will help Britney realise how much support there is for her in the wake of her conservatorship battle. The singer added, “I’m so excited to be able to do it with her because if it is a big hit, and I think it may be, it will give her so much more confidence than she’s got already and she will realize that people actually love her and care for her and want her to be happy.”

Meanwhile, Elton appeared on The Hits Radio Breakfast Show on Wednesday where he told how he helped Lewis Capaldi choose the lead single from his new album. He said, “Lewis came round and played me three or four songs [from the album] and the song that they were going to release as a single was a beautiful ballad. I said go with the more up-tempo one because people won’t expect that.”

The singer added, “I mooted that because of Ed Sheeran and X. When he put that album out he wanted to go with a ballad. I said listen you’ve had two ballads out, The A Team and Lego House, so go with Sing because no one will know it’s you. ‘So instead of putting a ballad out they went with Sing and it just smashed it straight away.'” Elton, who is currently on his farewell tour, said that he’s never been happier than he is now at the age of 75.
