‘Barbie’ Trailer Out Today, Posters Gives First Look Of The Multi-Starrer Cast

The childhood love for dolls is brought back in a motion picture. Margot Robbie is set to play the childhood perfection of beauty Barbie, releasing this year.

In the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy from Warner Bros. and Mattel, Barbie breaks out of her perfect doll universe and enters the human world. While fans have seen for the first time some official and unofficial photos of stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the highly anticipated film directed by Greta Gerwig, not much is known about the supporting cast.

Now the trailer and new posters reveal more about the Barbies, Ken, and people in the film, and tease an appearance in by John Cena, whose character is currently unknown and doesn’t appear at first glance.

While some of Barbie’s most notable family and friends, like Skipper, Christie, and Stacie, don’t feature on the posters released Tuesday, there is one longtime character in the doll’s inner circle.

It looks like Gerwig’s film with Michael Cera as a character on its poster, indicating the film plans to play around with different eras of Barbie. Cera is joined by several Ken, a diverse group that reflects the toy line’s modern expansion into more inclusive versions of Barbie’s male counterpart. (In 2017, Mattel introduced 15 variations of Ken, with three body types, seven skin tones, eight hair colors, and nine different hairstyles). Liu’s character also takes on Gosling’s Ken in the trailer.

A trailer released last December gave a vague preview of the film, in which Barbie is expelled from her doll country and embarks on an adventure among real people. “Living in Barbie land means being a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you’re having a total existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken,” teased the trailer.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2020 about the film, Robbie shared that the film plans to change people’s expectations.”We like things that feel a little weird,” said the actress, who first joined the film in 2018. “Something like Barbie, where the IP, the name itself, people immediately get an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot’ I’m playing Barbie, I know what that is,” but our goal is to say, ‘Whatever whatever you think we’re going to give you something totally different that you didn’t know you wanted.” …Can we really honor the IP and the fanbase and also surprise people? Because if we can do all this and stimulate thoughtful conversations, then we really fire on all cylinders.”

Rhea Perlman, who stars in the film but does not appear on any of the posters, previously told The Daily Beast in August that the film “is not just some stupid movie about a doll. This is going to be a really great film. Greta Gerwig is a great director and Margot Robbie is the main Barbie. It’s very different, very beautiful, and very funny.” Barbie hits theaters on July 21st.
