Barack Obama Gets His First Emmys Nomination For Netflix Series ‘Our Great National Parks’

The former U.S. President Barack Obama was the leader of the pack for Netflix's five-part docuseries, Our Great National Parks, which premiered this year in April.

The former U.S. President Barack Obama is now an Emmy nominee! Obama bagged his first nomination on Tuesday in the Outstanding Narrator category for his work in the Netflix series Our Great National Parks. The former President was nominated in the category along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War), David Attenborough (The Mating Game), W. Kamau Bell (We Need to Talk About Cosby) and Lupita Nyong’o (Serengeti II).

Obama was the leader of the pack for the five-part docuseries that premiered this year in April. Our Great National Parks give viewers a closer look at some of the world’s hidden gems, ranging from organisms to species and beyond. The former president lends informative and comedic commentary as he walks viewers through a celebration of the earth’s greatest national parks and wild spaces. Each episode describes the story of a national park through the lives of its wildest residents while exploring our relationship with the wilderness.

Moreover, Our Great National Parks was also nominated for Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program. Netflix scored big during Tuesday’s Emmy nominations ceremony. In addition to Our Great National Parks, Ozark, Stranger Things (Emmy nominations), Cheer, Selling Sunset and Queer Eye were just some of the streaming giant’s series that snagged nominations for this year’s awards show. Squid Game made history, with 14 nominations, as the first Korean-language series to break through at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Additionally, the director of the global phenomenon, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, has become the first native Korean to earn Emmy nominations for both Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Squid Game’s five actors have also been nominated for their stellar performances, thus making them the first native Korean actors to receive Emmy nods.

Squid Game follows hundreds of cash-strapped players who accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes. The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on the 12th of September, 2022 on NBC and Peacock.
