‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Teaser Trailer Garners Huge Views On First Day

The views of Avatar: The Way of Water teaser trailer are ahead of all recent Star Wars movies, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The first teaser trailer for James Cameron’s sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has recently dropped and it nabs a huge wave of interest after playing exclusively in cinemas over the weekend. The teaser finished its first 24-hour online window with 148.6 million views, including 23 million from China alone, according to Disney and 20th Century.

The views of Avatar 2 is ahead of all recent Star Wars movies, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Like Avatar 2, the teaser trailer for that movie also played exclusively in theatres first. Meanwhile, Avatar 2’s views on YouTube and across social media don’t include the millions of people watching the teaser on the big screen before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opened to an huge $187 million domestically and nearly $450 million overseas.

However, talking about the other comps for teasers, Universal’s F9: The Fast Saga nabbed 202.7 million online views in its initial 24 hours, Black Widow garners 116.8 million, Incredibles 2 nabs 113.1 million and Rise of Skywalker grabs total 112.4 million views. Avatar sequel, which will release in theatres on December 16, centres on returning Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, along with Na’vi Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña, and their family, and the lengths they go to keep each other safe.

Returning stars also include Sigourney Weaver as Dr Grace Augustine and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, and big-name newcomers include Vin Diesel and Cameron’s Titanic star Kate Winslet. Avatar 1 was release in 2009 and became the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office with $2.84 billion, not adjusted for inflation. The original Avatar will be re-released in cinemas on September 23, with restored pictures and sound.

However, the recently released teaser trailer of Avatar catches up with the Sully family in Pandora more than 10 years after Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) left off. In this fantastical Avatar future, there’s no clear plot, just blue aliens and vibes. The loosely presented conflict places the Sullys in the line of nondescript fire as they fight to maintain a sense of safety in the midst of turmoil.

The director originally planned for the four sequels, which were reportedly filmed simultaneously, to be released in two-year gaps across December 2021, December 2023, December 2025, and December 2027. However, the release of each film now will be shifted forward a year to accommodate for the multiple delays that have plagued their production.
