It seems like no one can beat James Cameron but only he can. Avatar: The Way Of Water becomes the fourth highest-grossing film of all time just over a week after the long-awaited sequel reached $2 billion at the box office globally. The highly anticipated sequel has now secured a coveted spot among the five highest-grossing movies of all time with $2.071 billion in global sales.
Currently, the top spot is held by James Cameron’s other hit Avatar with $2.923 billion. Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame is at No. 2 with $2.799 billion and Titanic at No. 3 with $2.195 billion. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens now holds the number 5 spot with $2.071 billion at the global box office.
James Cameron’s latest hit, The Way Of Water, is yet to beat his 1997 classic, Titanic. However, the sequel soon will cross the historic numbers as it’s climbed from $2 to $2.1 billion in just 10 days. Avatar sequel is reported as ‘one of the most expensive films ever made, with a budget estimated at $350 million or more.’
Filmmaker James Cameron had recently been open about his thoughts ahead of releasing the long-awaited sequel, particularly considering the pandemic’s effects on moviegoing. The director shared, “The big issue is: Are we going to make any damn money? Big, expensive films have got to make a lot of money.” He added, “We’re in a new world post-COVID, post-streaming. Maybe those [box office] numbers will never be seen again. Who knows? It’s all a big roll of the dice.”
Meanwhile, Avatar is creating a buzz not just box office, but the film is also doing great at award ceremonies. Recently, Avatar: The Way of Water got Academy Awards nominations in four categories. The film has been nominated for Best Pictures, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design and Best Sound. Previously, the film bagged Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Visual Effects.
For the unversed, Avatar: The Way Of Water follows Jake Sully and Ney’tiri as they have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
