Ellen DeGeneres Gets Slammed By Netizens
Ellen DeGeneres is currently facing a lot of backlash on social media after she compared self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis to ‘being in jail’. The talk show host who amidst the lockdown has made her show virtual, made the comment while she was broadcasting her show from home.
Ellen quoted, “One thing that I've learned from being in quarantine is that people -- this is like being in jail, is what it is.”
The American comedian then added, “It's mostly because I've been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.” The 62-year old then went on to say that she feels bad for the kids at home, the college students and parents. "I feel bad for a lot of people. But I think that a lot of people out there need words of encouragement, and that's what I want to do,” she further added.
Ellen also praised and applauded the credible works of the health workers to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.
But her comment of ‘being in jail’ attracted a lot of backlashes. One viewer on YouTube commented, “Sitting inside her fifteen million dollar mansion complaining and comparing it to a prison, very tone-deaf Ellen.”
Another person tweeted, “Except that people in jail can't practice social distancing, don't have enough water or toilet paper and are going to die at exceptional rates from COVID-19. Except for that, Ellen, your quarantine experience is just like being in jail." The comedian hosted the "at-home edition.”
Ellen hosted the ‘at-home-edition’ of the show which was filmed by her wife, actress Portia de Rossi.
Well, Ellen is not the only celebrity to have been bashed by the netizens for their attempt to outreach during the coronavirus pandemic.
A couple of weeks back, Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot too faced backlash after she posted a video of herself and other celebs singing the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. The celebs got slammed for singing that song as all of them are financially well-to-do and can provide monitory relief to help the needy in the midst of a crisis.
A tweet below that video read, "Imagine -- IMAGINE -- having $17 million dollars and thinking that making a video clip of you singing one line of a song would help anyone."
The netizens believe that the celebs insensitive behavior is coming from a place of privilege and they should understand the impact it can have on the common public who look up to them as role models.
