Actor Sam Worthington Gives An Update On Avatar 3 & 4

Sam Worthington recently revealed that the fifth film is in the works, adding, 'if we're lucky enough to get it.'

Avatar: The Way of Water is just a few weeks away and star Sam Worthington has shared an update on Avatar 3 and Avatar 4. Worthington returns in the sequel to 2009’s Avatar as Jake Sully, who has a new family of his own on Pandora. The actor revealed they’ve already shot most of Avatar 3.

Avatar: The Way of Water, which James Cameron recently admitted will need to make $2 billion just to break even, will lead into Avatar 3, currently expected to hit theatres December 20, 2024, with Worthington revealing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that between 80% and 90% of Avatar 3 has already been filmed.

Worthington revealed, “We’ve filmed about 80%, 90% of three. We’re still owing some scenes.” The actor also added that there were some scenes already filmed for Avatar 4, simply because they involved kids that would be too old if they waited. ‘And in Four we did a few scenes because the kids were ageing out, so we have to do it before they get a bit older,’ Worthington explained.

He added there is a fifth film in the works, ‘if we’re lucky enough to get it,’ adding, ‘We’re not arrogant enough to assume it’s going to connect.’ ‘We really hope so because we love the movie and hope other people do too,’ Worthington continued. Avatar 3 is currently slated for release on December 20, 2024, with the fourth film tentatively slated for December 18, 2026.

Director Cameron has stated that he has alternate plans to wrap up the franchise with Avatar 3 if The Way of Water isn’t a huge hit at the box office. He added that director James Cameron just locked the picture on The Way Of Water on Saturday, and the cast and crew saw the film on Monday.

When asked what he thought of the sequel, Worthington stated, ‘The first one, it blows it away.’ ‘I get quite emotional talking about it, because what Jim’s done, he’s made it about a family, and it’s powerful,’ Worthington added. ‘Not only is it visually stunning and you’re seeing a part of Pandora you’ve never seen before, all underwater, but it’s about what you do to protect your family,’ the actor continued.
