Academy Invites 487 Global Film Artists For Membership for 2024

The 2024 Class Includes 19 Oscar Winners and 71 Award Nominees Among the Invite List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 487 global artists for membership for 2024, continuing its commitment to diversity and global representation within the film industry. The Academy announced the news of extending the invitations to join Oscar Organizer’s membership ranks. If all the invitees accept it, then the Academy would have 9,934 voting members with a total membership of 10,910. The list for the year 2024 is divided into nineteen branches, of which the invitee must select only one from those branches to join the Academy.

According to the organisation, this year’s class includes 19 Oscar winners and 71 Academy Award nominees among the invite list. Not only this, the AMPAS’ 2024 class has forty-four per cent women along with forty-one per cent belittled racial/ethnic communities. The percentage outside the U.S. is fifty-six, from the fifty-six territories and countries.

The notable artists who received the invite include Martin Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon star, who also received an Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone; the managing director of Creative Artists Agency’s (CAA) managing director, Chris Silbermann; Past Lives (2023) writer-director, Celine Song; and  Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the national executive director and chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists).

“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of new members,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang in a joint statement. And, Kramer and Yang added, “These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community.” This year’s 487 invites is the highest amount of invitations by the Oscars after 819 members exited in 2020. Last year, in 2023, there were 398 invites. And, the highest number comes from 2018 with 928 membership invitations.

The 2024 membership invitation marks a milestone in the Academy’s journey towards a more inclusive and representative organization. If these new members join the ranks, the Film Academy’s vision of a diverse and dynamic film community will take another significant step forward.
