Why Rakesh Roshan Asked to Kareena Kapoor to Leave the Film Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai?

As Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai celebrates its 25th anniversary, we are reminded of the moment when Ameesha Patel disclosed the true reason for Kareena Kapoor's departure from the film.

Twenty-five years ago, Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan embarked on his career in the Hindi film industry with the release of Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000). In addition to skillfully portraying two distinct characters and captivating audiences with his graceful dance performances, Hrithik enchanted viewers with his charming on-screen chemistry alongside co-star Ameesha Patel. Their portrayal of Rohit/Raj and Sonia was truly delightful. However, as many film enthusiasts are aware, the original plan for the film included Kareena Kapoor in the leading role. Let us explore the underlying reasons for Kareena’s replacement by Ameesha Patel.

It was reported that Kareena had exited the film due to a ‘misunderstanding’ involving her mother, Babita Kapoor, and Hrithik’s father, Rakesh Roshan, who is a director and producer of the film. However, years later, during a conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Ameesha asserted that Kareena did not voluntarily leave the project but was, in fact, asked to depart. Ameesha stated, “Actually, Kareena didn’t back out. From what Rakesh ji told me, he asked her to leave the film because they were having differences.” It is noteworthy that the filmmaker himself never made this assertion, attributing the issue primarily to Babita’s ‘interference’ in various interviews. Following Kareena’s departure from the film, Rakesh brought Ameesha on board within three days.

Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel made a significant impact in Bollywood with their debut in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, while Kareena Kapoor commenced her acting career in the same year with Refugee, starring alongside Abhishek Bachchan. Kareena’s performance earned her the Best Female Debut award at multiple ceremonies, whereas Hrithik received numerous accolades for Best Actor and Best Male Debut. Although Hrithik and Kareena did not launch their careers simultaneously, they captivated audiences just a year later with their remarkable chemistry in Karan Johar’s iconic film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).
