Director Ram Gopal Varma known for his groundbreaking contributions to Indian cinema, recently shared a deeply personal reflection on his iconic 1998 film Satya and why he feels he can no longer make films like it. Satya marked a turning point in Indian film history with its gritty portrayal of the underworld which was unlike anything audiences had seen before. But despite his legacy with films such as Rangeela, Sarkar, Siva, Bhoot, Kaun? and many more, the filmmaker admitted that he has struggled to recreate that magic in recent years.
In a heartfelt post shared on X (formerly Twitter), director Ram Gopal Varma poured his heart out about his emotional experience watching Satya again after 27 years. He confessed that the film which had once been a symbol of his passion and vision, now holds a place in his heart for different reasons. “By the time SATYA was rolling to an end, while watching it 2 days back for 1st time after 27 yrs, I started choking with tears rolling down my cheeks,” Ram Gopal Varma wrote. He continued, saying that his tears were not only for the tragedy within the film but also for his own journey since its release.

The director explained how making a film is akin to giving birth to something where the true significance of the creation often isn’t fully realized until much later. “Making a film is like giving birth to a child originating from throes of passion without truly realizing what kind of a child I am giving birth to,” he wrote. As the years went by, RGV confessed that he became more consumed with the idea of moving on to the next project, rather than pausing to appreciate what he had already created.
Reflecting on his earlier works, the filmmaker shared a deep regret. “Coming back to the hotel after the screening of SATYA, and sitting in the dark, I didn’t understand why with all my so-called intelligence, I did not set this film as a benchmark for whatever I should do in the future,” he wrote. He further revealed that the success of Satya led him to lose sight of his true artistic intentions. Instead of building on that success with sincerity, he admits to getting distracted by shock value and technical gimmicks in his later works.
“Some of my later films might have been successful, but I do not believe that any of them had the same honesty and integrity which is in SATYA,” Director Ram Gopal Varma added, acknowledging how his unique vision was clouded by his own success. The intense focus on technical innovation and attempting to top previous successes led to a string of films that in hindsight lacked the soul of his earlier works.
The filmmaker then shared a powerful confession, by adding, “I might not be able to make a film like SATYA ever again, but not even having an intention to do so is an unpardonable crime against Cinema.” This statement talks about his deep respect for the authenticity and integrity that Satya represented. Despite the overwhelming success of his subsequent films, Ram Gopal Varma admitted that they did not carry the same weight or truth that Satya did.

In an emotional turn, the director promised to never forget the lessons learned from Satya. He vowed that every future film he makes will embody the same sincerity, regardless of the genre or subject matter. He also confessed his regret for not following his own standard which would have prevented him from making many of the films he later regretted.
The filmmaker concluded with a hopeful message for himself and his fans, “Finally, now I took a vow that whatever little of my life is left, I want to spend it sincerely and create something as worthy as SATYA and this truth I swear on SATYA,” he said in the conclusion.
Amid fans wondering why Ram Gopal Varma isn’t creating films like he once did, this long heartfelt confession by the powerful filmmaker shows a glimmer of hope for RGV fans. It’s now a wait-and-watch situation to see how he will once again captivate audiences with his future creations!
