When Amitabh, Dharmendra & Hema Didn’t Show Up For Sholay’s 25th Anniversary

In the year 2000, the makers of Sholay threw a grand party to celebrate film's 25th anniversary. However, it was a dull event as none of the lead cast showed up.

Sholay has clocked 47 years of the release today. The iconic Hindi film was released in theatres on 15 August 1975. Featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Hema Malini in the lead roles, Sholay emerged to be the highest-grossing film of that time. Decades have passed, and it is still considered one of the best films in Indian cinema.

In the year 2000, the film marked its 25th anniversary. The occasion was big and therefore, a grand party was organized in Mumbai for the cast and crew to get together and celebrate. Veteran producer G.P Sippy and Sippy Films celebrated the 25th anniversary of Sholay at Hotel Regent on August 12th. The party was organised on the 12th instead of the 15th of August so as not to interfere with India’s Independence day celebrations. The entire film fraternity was invited. Waiters were dressed in Gabbar Singh’s costumes as they served the guests. While the plans were huge, the celebration party turned out to be a dull night.

Many crew members and supporting cast like Viju Khote, Mac Mohan and AK Hangal turned up for the celebrations. However, not many celebs marked their presence, except a few names like Dilip Kumar and Anil Kapoor. And here’s the shocking part. Even the lead cast was missing from the party. Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan, none of them showed up for the 25th anniversary of Sholay. Despite the party being organised on a grand level, it missed all the glam.

Well, the next milestone is the 50th anniversary in 2025 and we hope we get to see a reunion then!
