Today marks Vyjayanthimala’s birthday, celebrating an exceptional actress and dancer who revolutionized Indian cinema with her impeccable screen presence and remarkable classical Bharatanatyam skills. Even at the age of 91, Vyjayanthimala continues to enchant audiences with her evergreen aura, having retired from acting in the 1970s but remaining active in dance.
Over a career spanning just 20 years, Vyjayanthimala made significant contributions to Indian cinema, starring alongside legendary actors such as Dilip Kumar. Their on-screen chemistry was evident in timeless classics like Devdas, Madhumati, Leader, and Naya Daur. However, their professional relationship faced a significant setback during the making of Ram Aur Shyam.
Ram Aur Shyam, directed by Tapi Chanakya and produced by Tollywood filmmakers Chakrapani and Nagi Reddy, was a remake of the 1964 Telugu film Ramudu Bheemudu. Vyjayanthimala was initially signed for the film, but tension soon arose between her and the production team.
As per the reports, producer Nagi Reddy thought Vyjayanthimala was being fussy about her jewellery and costumes, which led to disputes with the filmmakers. Additionally, the other reason was, that she once came late to the set, causing frustration, particularly with Dilip Kumar, who was reportedly waiting for her and being ready for the shot.
After arriving, she did not apologize and went directly to her makeup room. This behaviour led the filmmakers to remove her from the film. Although she had already shot a few scenes, Vyjayanthimala believed that Dilip Kumar had suggested removing her from the project, leading to a professional fallout between the two stars.

After this misunderstanding, Vyjayanthimala and Dilip Kumar reportedly lost touch. However, Saira Banu, Kumar’s wife, played the role of bridge to mend their broken relationship. In an interview, Banu revealed that after addressing the issue at a meeting, Vyjayanthimala and Kumar got connected again and she grew very close with her, like “two sisters”, affectionately calling Vyjayanthimala “Akka” (big sister). Following this reconciliation, the 91-year-old actress continued to visit Kumar in Mumbai with her son, even during his later years when he faced health issues.
On Vyjayanthimala’s birthday, we celebrate her enduring legacy and wish her continued health and vitality as she turns 91 today. Her contributions to cinema remain unparalleled, whose spirit continues to inspire!
