In her heartfelt caption, Vidya referred to M.S. Subbulakshmi as the ‘Queen of Music’, a title famously given to her by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Vidya also highlighted how Sarojini Naidu referred to her as the ‘Nightingale of India’. The transformation was not just about her look, but also a reflection of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s simplicity, grace and charm.
Vidya Balan’s recreation of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s persona included four iconic sarees that the musician wore and popularized between the 1960s and 1980s. Vidya acknowledged that half of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s appearance was her rich and vibrant sarees, while the other half was her simple accessories. This included her distinctive two nose pins, jasmine flowers adorning her hair and the traditional kumkum on her forehead.
