Sooraj Barjatya is receiving much love and praise for his latest release Uunchai. The filmmaker has worked on many films with Salman Khan. Even days back the superstar had publicly called Sooraj his best director. Salman Khan got a breakthrough in the industry with Maine Pyaar Kiya directed by Sooraj Barjatya. Recently, the filmmaker revealed Salman Khan had initially failed the screen test but he was brought back to the project after five months.
The filmmaker has been working in the industry over the years as an assistant director and later turned director with his home production company Rajshri Films. Sooraj Barjatya directed his first film Maine Pyaar Kiya as a director. The hit romance drama was not only Sooraj Barjatya’s directorial debut but also a film that gave Salman Khan recognition. However, scoop information is that Salman Khan was rejected from the hit movie which later happened to be his turning point.
Speaking with Humans of Bombay, Sooraj said, “At 21, I began writing Maine Pyar Kiya. But let me tell you a fun fact–the first script got rejected and it took me two years to write a new one! But the journey was daunting–at Rajshri, our production house, our last few films were a flop and we were suffering financially. No actor wanted to work with us. And then one day, I met a young man who we’d rejected after his first screen test. But there was something about him. So, five months later, we got him on board. That man was Salman Khan.”
He went on to say, “The script was ready and so was the cast, but there was no money. But we knew the film would work. So, dad borrowed. The shoot began and we know what happened then—it became an iconic film! And over the years, a lot of people have said–‘We keep going back to your movies.’ It reminds them of simpler times and that’s what I want to keep doing. In fact, my next film, Uunchai, is also a film of that kind–a film on friendship; for everyone!”
Maine Pyaar Kiya is a 1989’s romantic musical drama featuring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in the lead role. The movie was written and directed by Sooraj Barjatya and produced under Rajshri Films. Maine Pyaar Kiya made at a budget of 2 crores collected 28 crores at the box office. The movie is now available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
