Sonu Nigam reveals surprising details about music legend AR Rahman, offering a rare glimpse into the composer’s reserved nature amid his ongoing personal challenges. AR Rahman has been in the spotlight recently, not for his musical achievements but due to his divorce from his wife Saira Banu after 29 years of marriage. In an exclusive interview with O2 India, Sonu Nigam shared insights into his experience working with Rahman and his comments have sparked quite a stir.
Recalling his first collaboration with Rahman for the movie Daud, Sonu explained how he was surprised by Rahman’s hands-off approach. Unlike many composers who provide specific instructions, Rahman let Sonu sing freely, allowing the artist to explore his own interpretation. This was just one of the many moments that stood out for Sonu during their collaborations.
When asked about Rahman’s long-lasting relationships with people like Sivamani and Mani Ratnam, Sonu Nigam reveals more about Rahman’s personality. “He doesn’t have relationships. He is not the kind of person who has relationships. He doesn’t open up to anyone. At least, I have never seen that. Perhaps, he opens up in front of his older friends, who have known him as Dileep. But I haven’t seen him opening up or having any relationship with anybody. He is not a friendly person. He is just into his work,” Sonu candidly shared.
Sonu further elaborated that Rahman’s inability to gossip isn’t a drawback but rather a reflection of his focused nature. “He doesn’t know how to gossip, and that is not his drawback. This is how he is. He doesn’t want to know anything about me or anybody else and he doesn’t want anybody else to know about him also. He is a unique personality.”
Despite his reserved nature, Sonu made it clear that Rahman is a deeply respectful person who doesn’t speak ill of others and remains solely focused on his work and prayer. This level of introspection and privacy has often surrounded Rahman, especially following his divorce announcement in November.
