Singer Usha Uthup’s Husband Jani Chacko Uthup Dies At 78

Singer Usha Uthup's husband, Jani Chacko Uthup, aged 78, passed away after experiencing a heart attack at their Kolkata residence.

Jani Chacko Uthup, the 78-year-old husband of renowned singer Usha Uthup, passed away in Kolkata on Monday night following a cardiac arrest. According to a PTI report, Jani was watching television when he suffered a heart attack. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Usha Uthup is left to mourn his loss alongside their children, Sunny and Anjali. She was previously married to the late Ramu.

Jani Chacko Uthup, who worked in the tea plantation industry, met Usha at the legendary Trincas in the early 1970s.

His final rites are scheduled to take place in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Anjali Uthup, Usha’s daughter, honored her late father with a heartfelt tribute on social media. She wrote, “Appa…gone too soon…but as stylishly as you lived…most handsome man in the world…we love you a true gentleman and Lawrencian to the core and the finest Tea Taster.”

At 76, Usha Uthup was recently honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government. Her singing career took off at a nightclub in Chennai, where she was discovered by the legendary actor Dev Anand at a nightclub in Delhi. He subsequently gave her the opportunity to debut in Bollywood with his 1971 directorial film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

Usha Uthup, a versatile singer, gained fame in the ’70s and ’80s disco era with hits like “One Two Cha Cha Cha” and “Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache,” collaborating with RD Burman and Bappi Lahiri. Recently, she performed “Vande Mataram” from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and “Darling” from 7 Khoon Maaf, where she also acted as Maggie Aunty. Known for the Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai theme and Amul jingles, Usha has sung in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films.
