Actor-producer Sohum Shah recently announced the much-anticipated sequel to his 2018 hit film, Tumbbad, following the successful re-release of the original film. Tumbbad 2 promises to dive even deeper into the dark themes of greed and human desire, themes that were key to the first film.
Shah expressed his excitement, saying that Tumbbad has been a special project for him, and the ongoing love for it only reinforces the belief that content is the true king in filmmaking. He added that with Tumbbad 2, they aim to push the boundaries of cinema even further, creating a more intense experience and exploring the idea of limitless greed.
The re-release of Tumbbad has reignited interest in the film, even surpassing its original box office numbers on the first day. The film, which centers on a Marathi legend about the god Hastar and human greed, has once again captured the imagination of audiences.
Shah announced the sequel through a teaser video that featured Vinayak and his son Pandurang, with a haunting message in the background: “Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega… darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega” (The wheel of time is round, what has passed will return… the door will open again).
Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve, was based on a story originally written by Marathi writer Narayan Dharap in 1993. The film follows the journey of Vinayak as he searches for a hidden treasure in the village of Tumbbad in 20th century Maharashtra. The combination of folklore, mythology, and fantasy horror made the film a standout success.
With Tumbbad 2, Sohum Shah and his team are set to revisit the dark world of greed and treasure, promising audiences a thrilling cinematic experience.
