Shahrukh Khan became a victim of criticism after his small gesture while offering prayer at Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral was wrongly perceived by people. Shahrukh had raised his hands in prayer and then blew out air on Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains. As the videos and pictures surfaced online, Shahrukh was accused of ‘spitting’ at Lata’s mortal remains.
His fans and well-wishers immediately stepped in to defend the actor and also schooled the ignorant people. Actress Rakhi Sawant, during an interaction with the paparazzi, expressed her anger towards those who criticized Shahrukh by making false accusations. Rakhi said, “This is very wrong. It shouldn’t have happened. Shahrukh Khan is a legend. People should be ashamed of themselves. Shahrukh was just offering a dua and then blew air. In Islam, it is done so that the deceased go to heaven. People should be ashamed and should stop saying demeaning things about him. Everyone has a different way of praying. Live and let live.”
Actor turned politician Urmila Matondkar has also supported Shahrukh. She said in an interview, “As a society, we have deteriorated so much that we think praying is spitting. You are talking about an actor who has represented the country on various international platforms. Politics has reached such low levels and it’s really sad.”
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit wrote on Twitter, “Fringe targeting @iamsrk by falsely accusing him of spitting at #LataMangeshkar Ji’s funeral should be ashamed of themselves. He prayed & blew on her mortal remains for protection & blessings in her onward journey. Such communal filth has no place in a country like ours.”
Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 on 6 Feb 2022. She was cremated with full state honours at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
