Nandita Puri, the wife of the late actor Om Puri, has recently addressed the controversy surrounding her book, Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri. This biography, released in 2009, caused a lot of attention because it revealed private details about Om Puri’s life, including his sexual encounters as a teenager. Rumors suggested that these revelations upset Om Puri, but Nandita has now spoken out to deny those claims.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Nandita Puri explained that the stories about her having a falling-out with Om Puri because of the book were made up by gossip journalists. She said Om was never angry with her for writing about his personal life. In fact, she mentioned that Om had even encouraged her to write about his difficult childhood and life experiences.
Nandita shared that Om Puri didn’t mind including details about his teenage years in the biography. She recalled that when they discussed it, Om defended the inclusion of his past, saying it was part of his life and should not be hidden. According to Nandita, Om felt there was nothing wrong with sharing the truth, but he was disappointed in how the media had sensationalized certain parts of the book. The focus on these private details overshadowed his long and successful career.
Nandita added that the media had taken parts of the book out of context, focusing on Om Puri’s teenage experiences instead of highlighting his professional accomplishments and struggles. She claimed that while Om was frustrated with the media’s portrayal of the biography, he had given her permission to write everything she did, and the rumors of him being upset were untrue.
