Mumbai Court Grants Kangana Ranaut One Final Opportunity Before Issuing Non-Bailable Warrant in Javed Akhtar Defamation Case

A Mumbai court has provided actor Kangana Ranaut with a final opportunity to appear before it considers issuing a non-bailable warrant in the defamation case brought against her by Javed Akhtar. Akhtar’s attorney requested the warrant due to Ranaut’s consistent absence from court, despite nearly 40 scheduled appearances. Ranaut attributed her non-attendance to her commitments in Parliament. This legal matter originated in 2020, and mediation efforts are still pending.

On Tuesday, the court extended one last chance to Kangana Ranaut, who is also a BJP MP, prior to the potential issuance of a non-bailable warrant in the ongoing defamation case initiated by Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar. Reports indicate that Ranaut did not attend the session intended to address the dispute. Her lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee, informed the Bandra court that she was unable to be present due to her parliamentary obligations. In response, advocate Jay K Bhardwaj, representing Akhtar, submitted a request for a non-bailable warrant, highlighting her repeated absences from approximately 40 significant court dates.

The court instructed Ranaut’s legal team to provide a response to this application. Ultimately, the Magistrate opted to grant Ranaut one final opportunity before proceeding with further actions. The conflict between Ranaut and Akhtar began in 2020 when the actress made comments regarding an alleged meeting with the veteran in a televised interview. Akhtar denied her claims and subsequently filed a defamation suit, asserting that her statements harmed his reputation. Ranaut later countered with a complaint against Akhtar, alleging that he coerced her into issuing an apology.

In December 2024, both parties had consented to mediation, but this process has yet to occur. The mediation session was scheduled for Tuesday, with Akhtar present before the Magistrate’s court; however, Ranaut’s absence has further postponed the proceedings.
