Veteran actress Sujata Mehta recently opened up about some of the most talked-about love stories in Bollywood. Known for her groundbreaking roles in films like Pratigyaat, Yateem, Gunaah and more Sujata Mehta is now more focused on theatre. In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, she discussed the romantic relationships of actors Mithun Chakraborty-Sridevi and Sunny Deol-Dimple Kapadia, two pairs whose love stories made headlines in the 80s and 90s. During the interview, Sujata reflected on her equation with Sridevi, one of Bollywood’s most iconic actresses. Sujata said she never felt jealous of Sridevi’s stardom, despite the media’s attempts to stir rivalry between them. Sujata described their relationship as professional and respectful. When asked if Sridevi had ever confided in her about her breakup with Mithun Chakraborty, Sujata explained that she never delved into her colleagues’ personal lives, choosing to maintain professional boundaries.

Sujata Mehta shared, “I never asked anyone about their personal lives, but I do remember Mithun Da once saying, ‘Yes, we were madly in love, but it didn’t work out.’ It was just a general conversation we had and I never pushed for more details.” Mithun and Sridevi were romantically involved in the mid-1980s, even though Mithun was already married to actress Yogita Bali. Their brief relationship lasted from 1985 to 1988 and it stirred much controversy in the media at the time due to Mithun’s marital status.
Sujata Mehta on Sunny Deol-Dimple Kapadia’s Open Relationship
Sujata also talked about the much-publicized romance between Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia. Sujata had worked with both actors in the film Gunaah (1993) and had also starred alongside Sunny in Yateem. When asked about their chemistry on set, Sujata shared that Sunny and Dimple were open about their relationship during the shoot. “They had great chemistry and it was visible, there was nothing to hide,” Sujata said.
Recalling her time with the couple during the film’s shoot, Sujata added, “When we traveled for the shooting of ‘Gunaah’ to Bangalore, their bond was evident both on-screen and off-screen. They were naturally comfortable with each other, and I think it was destiny that brought them together.”
For those unfamiliar with the background, Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi’s relationship was highly publicized, even though Mithun was already married. Their brief marriage caused quite a stir in the industry, especially when it ended just a few years later. Similarly, Dimple Kapadia and Sunny Deol were rumored to be deeply in love during the shooting of several films, including Arjun, Aag Ka Gola and Manzil-Manzil. Although Dimple was separated from Rajesh Khanna, she and Sunny reportedly kept their relationship under wraps. However, Sunny’s ex-girlfriend, actress Amrita Singh, once confirmed that Sunny was indeed in a relationship with Dimple.
In addition to discussing her colleagues’ relationships, Sujata Mehta also opened up about her own personal life. She shared that she has been in a live-in relationship for 35 years with a man who is already married. Sujata candidly spoke about the complications in her relationship, especially regarding her partner’s wife, who does not approve of their bond. Despite the challenges, Sujata expressed her respect for the wife’s feelings and acknowledged that their relationship has had its difficulties over the years.
