Veteran actress Sujata Mehta, known for her candid remarks and bold roles in films like Pratigyaat and Yateem, has stirred headlines once again. In a recent interview, she confirmed the long-rumoured love story of Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt, shedding light on their relationship during the late 1980s.
Speaking to Hindi Rush, Sujata Mehta revealed that the chemistry between Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt wasn’t just for the screen. Their connection which sparked during the filming of Zameen (1987) was real. Sujata recalled, “Jab ‘Zameen’ film ki shooting chal rahi thi tabhi, yes, if I am not mistaken.” She added that while Sanjay didn’t visit Madhuri on set, their intimate scenes especially a rain sequence, spoke volumes about their bond. “Sanjay kabhi set pe nahi aaya lekin, hamari jab shooting chal rahi thi tabhi unka ek baarish ka gaana shoot hua tha, which was very sensuous aur humne vo photographs dekhe the album pe,” she shared.
Their rumoured romance became the talk of the town, especially after working together in hits like Thanedaar, Saajan and more. However, things reportedly changed when Sanjay Dutt was arrested in connection to the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts. Speculations about their breakup arose, though Sujata refrained from confirming the exact reason. “I don’t know how they got separated, that I don’t know how but yes, separation did happen,” she said.
Over the years, Madhuri Dixit chose to remain silent on the matter, dismissing rumours about her relationship with Sanjay Dutt. While Sanjay hinted at his feelings in a few interviews, the two never addressed their brief romance directly.
Interestingly, the pair reunited on screen after 22 years in Kalank (2019) leaving fans were thrilled to see them share the frame again, rekindling memories of their iconic on-screen chemistry.
