Madhur Bhandarkar On Box Office Dry Run “The Magic Of Cinema Will Never Go”

Madhur Bhandarkar opened up on returning to films after years and Bollywood dry run says it is just a phase

Madhur Bhandarkar is back to the game after an interval of five years. He is currently busy promoting his movie Babli Bouncer which premiered on 23rd September on Disney+ Hotstar. Written and directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Babli Bouncer is headlined by Tamannaah Bhatia. The filmmaker spoke on what kept him away from films for a long time.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s last film was the drama thriller Indu Sarkar which was released in 2017. Since then he was working on 3 projects and Babli Bouncer is one of them. Talking about the gap and his upcoming projects Bhandarkar said, “After 2017 I was working on a total of 3 subjects, including Babli Bouncer. It took 3 years to write– a women-centric hard-hitting film, a larger-than-life cop action drama and Babli Bouncer.”

He continued, “Usually, people jump from one film to another, but I wanted to invest my time in writing. When things got finalised for Babli Bouncers, we were thinking about the cast. In between, corona came to India. Two years have gone into it. We were just sitting idle. I also did India Lockdown which will be released soon.”

The situation in Bollywood is dry as films are struggling to make it good at the box office. Only a handful of movies have garnered success, rest are not attracting the audience. Madhur Bhandar stressed on the situation saying, “If the film industry suffers, we will suffer. This year only films like RRR, Pushpa, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and The Kashmir Files have done wonders at the box office. They were superhit. So this is wrong that films are not working. The magic of cinema will never go. The audience is now watching so many types of content on OTT platforms. The standard has become higher. But my gut feeling is that they will go parallel together.”

On the work front, after Babli Bouncer Madhur Bhandarkar has a movie on pandemic lockdown. The movie is titled India Lockdown and the it will depict the raw story of Indians during the first lockdown in India that was imposed due to covid-19 in 2020. Much more information about Indian Lockdown is not known yet also the released date has not been announced.
