Is OTT A Threat To Theatres? Rajkummar Rao Says It’s A Parallel Industry, I Don’t See…

Rajkummar Rao believes OTT and theatres have beautiful co-existence

Rajkummar Rao is gearing up for his upcoming web movie Monica, O My Darling. Taking a peak into his filmography the actor has a mix of theatrical movies and OTT releases. The actor who has worked on both platforms spoke about the essence of the two in the film industry.

Citing the poor time Bollywood is going through many asserted that OTT has an impact on the failure of movies at the box office. Aamir Khan had apparently argued if movies are released digitally after weeks or months then why the audience would visit theatres and invest money to watch movies on the big screen. However, Raj disagrees with remarks stating OTT has a hand in movie failure.

The 38-year-old admits there is no competition between the two and both platforms co-exist beautifully. He believes OTT is a great medium for telling stories and also a platform for budding actors who struggles to make it big to screens.

Rajkummar Rao said to Hindustan Times, “It’s a great time to tell stories because now you have so many platforms. Of course, theatres will always be there. But what the OTT platforms have done is that they have created so many opportunities for so many people who were not getting the kind of work that they deserve.”

He further gave an example of his friends, “I’m just happy because there are so many of my friends, who were immensely talented but were not getting enough work. But through these platforms, they are getting to show their talents through different stories and different characters.”

Talking about if OTT is a threat to theatres, Rao stated OTT will be a parallel industry. He thinks digital space will continue to grow even after the revival of the box office business. “They will definitely coexist. OTT will be a parallel industry. It will just inspire each other. I don’t see any kind of competition between the two. People love watching films, and also web projects, So, it will definitely beautifully coexist. We just need to inspire each other to push each other, and to sell better stories,” said Rao.

Rajkummar Rao is trying to make big in black comedy with Monica, O My Darling. It is a satire-laced crime thriller featuring Rajkummar Rao, Huma S Qureshi, Radhika Apte, Sikandar Kher, Bagavathi Perumal, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Sukant Goel, and Zayn Marie Khan. He will also be seen in another Netflix project titled Guns And Gulaabs.
