Musician Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, half of the celebrated duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, shared his heartfelt memories of his late partner, Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar in the rare interaction. Known for their remarkable work in over 750 Hindi films spanning three decades, the duo’s collaboration defined a golden era of Indian music. Laxmikant’s passing in 1998 left Pyarelal reflecting on their journey and the deep bond they shared.

In an exclusive interview with Lehren, Musician Pyarelal opened up about his early career as a violinist and how he and Laxmikant started working together. They initially served as assistants to the legendary RD Burman before becoming renowned for their work on Raj Kapoor’s films, including classics like Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram and Prem Rog. Pyarelal reminisced about how Raj Kapoor would always approve their compositions without any second though, proving their magical work.

Pyarelal also discussed their personal connection, noting how they shared various significant life details, such as their wedding dates and had similar family structures, including two children and two grandchildren. The bond they had was not only professional but deeply personal. In a heartfelt reflection, Pyarelal added, “As a person, main nahin jaana tha usko. Kyuki vo (Laxmikant) mere paas tha. Jo cheez paas mein hoti haina uski keemat nahi malum padti hai. As a person, main abhi tak samaj raha tha, thik hai yaar, dost hai, music karte hai, paise kamate hai, everything is fine, and he is very nice to me. Kyuki Laxmi ji ne kabhi muje na nahi bola hai kisi cheez ke liye, apne pure life mein.”

Pyarelal expressed his sorrow over Laxmikant’s death, saying he never truly appreciated the value of having Laxmikant so close until it was too late. He admitted, “If God would’ve whispered in my ear, I would’ve not let go of him.” Talking about their final days together, Pyarelal shared a heartwarming memory of their last meeting before a planned live show abroad. They had a drink together, which turned out to be their final moment as a duo. This showcases Pyarelal’s regret and enduring grief over the loss of his friend and partner.
