Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Wednesday morning after being found 100 grams overweight. The news quickly stirred a flurry of responses across different platforms. While many Bollywood celebs came forward and showed support to Vinesh, Bollywood veteran Hema Malini on the other hand received extreme criticism for her statement.
What Hema Malini Said About Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification?
Bollywood actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hema Malini shared her stance on Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympics and said, “Now we know how important it is to keep the weight in control. I hope she (Vinesh Phogat) loses those 100 grams quickly.”

However, Hema Malini’s statement on Vinesh’s disqualification has sparked extreme outrage from the netizens who slammed Hema Malini for being too insensitive. A user wrote, “Oh God! How can an MP be so much disgraceful when the entire country is mourning her loss. Pathetic.”
Another wrote, “Pathetic language. Wonder how these guys are fine actors with so much hatred inside.”, “She is such a disgrace to Indian women and Indian politics… shameful”, another wrote, “how will her losing 100gm now help? If you cannot say something nice, can you please shut up?”.
Vinesh Phogat’s Retirement
Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling on 8 August after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. She wrote, “Mother, wrestling has defeated me; I have lost. Forgive me, your dreams and my courage have all been shattered. I no longer have the strength to continue. Goodbye, wrestling 2001-2024 I will always be indebted to all of you. Apologies.”
