The iconic duo of Gulzar and Jagjit Singh, known for their individual brilliance in poetry and music, came together in 2006 to create the timeless album Koi Baat Chale. Their collaboration brought a unique depth to the ghazal genre, showcasing its versatility beyond the traditional themes of heartbreak and sadness. In a rare conversation during the album’s promotion, Gulzar and Jagjit Singh shared their thoughts on the evolving face of ghazals, a dialogue that still resonates today.
In throwback discussion with media, Gulzar explained why ghazals shouldn’t be limited to sadness. “Ghazal ko hum kyu usko udhaasi ke saath associate kar lete hai? Koi jaruri nahi ki usme dukh aur dard aur tanhayi ki baat hai,” he said, emphasizing that ghazals are capable of expressing a variety of emotions including social issues and politics. He added, “Ghazal har tarah ki baat kehti hai,” talking about its versatility in addressing contemporary themes.

Further, adding to Gulzar ji’s timeless words, Jagjit Singh then pointing out how modern ghazals have broadened their scope. “Aaj ki Ghazal bahut wide hogayi hai, har tarah ki subject ko cover karti hai,” he said, adding examples of his own songs like Main Hindu Na Musalman and Ab Main Ration Ki Qataron Mein, which dealt with political and social struggles.
In the same interview, the duo shared how they worked together to compose songs that connected deeply with people. Gulzar also praised notable Marathi poets like Suresh Bhat, Kishor Kadam, Dilip Chitre, Kusumagraj, Shrikant Thackeray and how they tried their best to showcase their work in Ghazal.
