Kumar Gaurav and Vijayta Pandit were a beloved on-screen couple in the 1980s, gaining fame with their debut film, Love Story (1981). The film was directed by Rahul Rawail and produced by Kumar Gaurav’s father, Rajendra Kumar, who was strongly opposed to their romance. After Rajendra Kumar’s disapproval, he arranged an engagement between his son and Reema Kapoor, daughter of Raj Kapoor, a close friend. In an exclusive interview, Vijayta Pandit opens up about the untold and unfulfilled aspects of their love story.
During her conversation with Lehren Retro, Vijayta Pandit revealed that Kumar Gaurav continued to visit her even after his engagement to Reema Kapoor. These visits left her parents scared, especially because Gaurav had already exchanged rings with Reema. Vijayta’s mother, a devoted follower of Lord Krishna, used to recite prayers using a mala (prayer beads) for 16 rounds.
Vijayta shared, “Mummy once asked, ‘Since you’re engaged and about to get married, why are you still coming to see my daughter? It’s not appropriate.’ Gaurav responded, ‘Aunty, even though I am engaged, I want to marry Vijayta.’ My mother was surprised and asked, ‘How can you marry her if you’re already engaged?’ Gaurav insisted, ‘No, Aunty, I will talk to my parents and marry her.’”
Watching his determination, Vijayta’s mother, Kamala Pandit, asked him to swear on the prayer mala. Vijayta recounted, “My mother said, ‘I recite prayers on this mala. If you truly intend to marry Vijayta, come here and swear that you will marry her.’”
So, what happened next? Even after all these fuss and promising on prayer mala, why did Kumar Gaurav and Vijayta Pandit did not end up marrying each other? For detailed insights into their love story and what followed, watch the full interview.
