Back in the 1980s, the romance between the debutants of the film Love Story (1981), Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav, was the talk of the town. While the couple fell in love during the filming, Gaurav’s father, the legendary actor Rajendra Kumar was strongly against their relationship. In between the movie’s schedule itself Rajendra Kumar arranged an engagement between Kumar Gaurav and Rima Kapoor, daughter of his close friend Raj Kapoor.
In an exclusive interview with Lehren Retro, Vijayta Pandit shared some shocking details about this period. She revealed, “I attended the engagement and when I saw Bunty (Kumar Gaurav) wearing the diamond ring which Rima had given him, I told him, ‘This ring is so beautiful.’ But Bunty got angry and said, ‘If you don’t like it, I’ll throw it away.’ I was so shocked by his reaction that I just ran away.”
Vijayta also recalled actress Reena Roy, who was standing with her and her sister Sulakshana during the engagement. She shared that Reena had noticed the tension between them and told Sulakshana, “Sulakshana, inka bahut pyaar hai. Tumne dekha kaise Bunty ne mere saamne ring nikal ke phek raha tha. Take care of it.”
Despite the engagement, Kumar Gaurav continued to visit Vijayta’s home and even spoke to her parents about their relationship. Eventually, the engagement with Rima Kapoor was called off, and Kumar Gaurav went on to marry Sanjay Dutt’s sister, Namrata Dutt. For all these details, watch the full interview below.
After Love Story, the audience never got to see Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav’s on-screen chemistry again, though they had been a hit pair in their debut film. Vijayta eventually married music composer Aadesh Shrivastava and the couple had two sons, Avitesh and Anivesh. Sadly, Aadesh passed away in 2015 after battling cancer.
