Sushmita Sen, the epitome of beauty and grace is currently being judged for her affair with Lalit Modi. The former Miss Universe, who never needed a man to buy her diamonds, adopted a kid when she was 24 and stood by her morals at every point of her life, is being called a ‘gold-digger’ when she finds love in Indian businessman Lalit Modi.
Sushmita Sen and ‘gold-digger’ don’t sit well within the same sentence. And who better would know this than the men who have actually been with Sushmita. Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, who has previously been in a relationship with Sushmita Sen has defended her relationship with Lalit Modi during an interview with India Today. He said that she is “the last person who checks out bank balances before she decides to fall in love”
Sushmita Sen and Vikram Bhatt dated during the mid-90s after she became Miss Universe in 1994 and entered the film industry. Vikram Bhatt was the writer of the 1996 film Dastak, which marked Sushmita Sen’s debut in Bollywood.
Seeing the ongoing controversy around her current relationship, Vikram Bhatt told India Today, “Sushmita is a love digger, not a gold digger. I think making fun of other people’s life is entertainment. Someone’s tragedy is someone’s entertainment, that’s always there. When Kareena [Kapoor] married Saif [Ali Khan], even she was trolled. So, I think it goes with the territory, if you are a celebrity and if there is a decision of yours which seems funny to netizens, they start trolling.”
He added, “Sushmita is the last person who checks out bank balances before she decides to fall in love with someone. I was penniless. I was directing Ghulam, but I had no money. I will not forget that Sushmita was the person who first took me to the US, and she paid for my trip. I had no money. When we reached Los Angeles and there was a limousine, and I was surprised. She said that she wanted to make my entry in the US very special.”
Recently, Sushmita Sen’s last boyfriend Rohman Shawl also reacted by saying, “Let’s be happy for them na. Love is beautiful. All I know is if she has chosen someone, he is worth it.”
Sushmita has herself reacted to the negativity she has been receiving for her choices in her personal life. She took to her Instagram and wrote, “It’s heartbreaking to see just how miserable & unhappy the world around us is becoming….The so called intellectuals with their idiosyncrasies….the ignorant with their cheap & at times funny gossip. The friends I never had & the acquaintances I’ve never met….all sharing their grand opinions & deep knowledge of my life & character…monetising the ‘Gold Digger’ all the way!!! Ah these geniuses!!! I dig deeper than Gold…and I’ve always (famously) preferred Diamonds!! And yes I still buy them myself!!!”
Last week, Lalit Modi shared some romantic pictures with Sushmita Sen and announced their relationship on social media. He called her his ‘better half’ but denied being married yet.
