Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez has publicly expressed expressed regret for his comments about Selena Gomez’s performance Emilia Pérez. In the recent appearance at Gaby Meza’s podcast, Eugenio had criticized Gomez’s Spanish-speaking skills, calling her performance “indefensible”. The backlash from fans and Selena’s gracious response prompted him to walk back his remarks.
Taking to the social media, Derbez issued an apology saying, “I truly apologize for my careless comments — they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for.”
Gomez, who portrayed Jessi del Monte in the musical crime drama, admitted she faced challenges while delivering her role in Spanish, a language she is not fluent in. In response to Derbez’s critique, Gomez said, “I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”
Her statement resonated with many and highlighted the effort she invested in her performance. Gomez also reminded critics to focus on the work rather than her fandom, which is often a contentious subject.
Following Gomez’s measured response, Derbez admitted he had been wrong in his judgment. In a heartfelt TikTok post, he wrote, “As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.”
He emphasized that Emilia Pérez, which centers around a cartel leader’s journey of transformation, should be celebrated for its bold narrative rather than diminished by his remarks. “I’m walking away from this with an important lesson learned,” Derbez added.
