Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi has created a huge fan base with his unconventional acting talent. He made his acting debut in 2003 and over the years, he has delivered many commercially successful and critically acclaimed films. But do you know that he isn’t the only person in his family who has achieved stardom? Well, his grandmother was a big film star in the 1950s. Her name was Meherbhano Mohammad Ali and she was lovingly called Meher Bano.

She then took the screen name Purnima at the start of her career. She acted in more than 80 Bollywood films and was a big film star in late 40s and 50s. She appeared in films including Patanga (1949), Jogan (1950), Sagai (1951), Jaal (1952), and Aurat (1953). She played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in the film Zanjeer.

She was married twice. Purnima first married a journalist who moved to Pakistan during the partition. Her second marriage was with filmmaker Bhagwandas Verma.

Purnima suffered from Alzheimer’s during the last few years of her life and died on 14 August 2013.
