‘Emergency’ Postponed: Kangana Ranaut Faces Controversy As Sikh Body Files PIL For Film Ban

Kangana Ranaut's ‘Emergency’ postponed after controversy; Sikh body files PIL for a ban. Will it release on September 6?

Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated biopic, ‘Emergency’, based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has hit a major setback. Initially set to release on September 6, 2024, the film has been postponed due to several significant issues, including the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) revoking its certificate and a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Sikh body in Madhya Pradesh seeking to ban the film.

The CBFC’s decision to revoke the certification of ‘Emergency’ postponed came after multiple petitions raised concerns about the film’s content. This has delayed the film’s release, as it now awaits clearance from the certification board. The controversy doesn’t end there. A Sikh organization in Madhya Pradesh has filed a PIL at the state’s high court, arguing that the film violates the fundamental rights of the Sikh community and is detrimental to societal interests. The high court is set to hear the case today, September 6, 2024.

Reacting to the ongoing controversy, Kangana Ranaut, who has acted, co-produced, written and directed ‘Emergency’, expressed her frustration in a recent podcast with Shubhankar Mishra. The 38-year-old actress said, “Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai. Bahut hi nirashajanak ye sthiti hai. Main toh khair bahut hi zyada disappointed hu apne desh se, aur jo bhi haalaat hain.”

She further added that despite the setbacks, she is determined to fight through the challenges and release the film, even if it means putting out an uncut version. “I’ve made this film with a lot of self-respect, which is why the CBFC can’t point out any contention. They’ve stalled my certificate, but I’m determined to release an uncut version of the film. I’ll fight in court and release an uncut version,” she said.

‘Emergency’ features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, the late Satish Kaushik and others in the pivotal roles. The film, directed by Kangana herself, is based on a screenplay by Ritesh Shah and is one of the most talked-about biographical political dramas of the year.
