In the 2003 film Chameli, Kareena played a street-smart prostitute,” which was important to her breaking the stereotype that she was a commercial actress. Rahul Bose played the depressed investment banker who is inspired by her to travel the path of redemption. But Kareena was not the first choice for this film. 

In fact, when the story of this film was being prepared, the director, Anant Balani, had thought of Ameesha Patel for the role of a sex worker. But Ameesha refused it because she said she did not suit the character. Then Kareena was taken, but director Anant died before the film could be completed. Later, the producer asked Sudhir Mishra to direct the film. When this film was released in theatres, Kareena’s acting was praised, and she got a different identity.
