Vijayta Pandit, who gained fame with her debut in the hit film Love Story (1981), quickly disappeared from the limelight after giving the first hit. Despite her promising start her career faced many ups and downs. In the 80s, rumours circulated about her romance with her co-star Kumar Gaurav, but now, for the first time on camera in an exclusive interview, she has opened up about their relationship.

Speaking to Lehren Retro, Vijayta Pandit revealed how romance on-screen can often lead to real-life emotions. She said that films with deep love stories, like Bobby, Rocky and Betaab, often made the lead actors falling for each other. She explained that during the making of Love Story, she was very young and new to the industry. Reflecting on her first experience, she shared, “Bunty (Kumar Gaurav) was the first guy whom I hugged for the first time in film and all these experiences were new for me. It was the first time I saw a guy who was touching me.”

Vijayta Pandit continued, “While we were shooting in Kashmir for 2-3 months, we both fell in love. Bunty was very fond of me. He used to run behind me, sing songs for me, dance with me while holding my hand.” However, Vijayta’s second sister, Maya, often accompanied her on the sets and was very strict. She would warn her, “Do not talk much with Bunty, do not roam with him here and there. Sit beside me.” Despite these restrictions, Vijayta and Kumar Gaurav grew closer while shooting. She added, “He used to make me laugh and he was such a charming boy.”

Their budding romance was noticed by Rajendra Kumar, Kumar Gaurav’s father and the producer of the film, realized they were falling in love and strongly opposed their relationship. His actions following this realization changed the course of their story.

Vijayta Pandit revealed that her relationship with Kumar Gaurav deeply affected her, as it was her first love. She also shared the personal challenges that followed the breakup. In 1991, Vijayta married music director Aadesh Shrivastava and they have two sons, Avitesh and Anivesh. Tragically, her husband passed away in 2015 after battling cancer, leaving her heartbroken once again.
