Boney Kapoor Cites Reason Behind The Failure Of South Remakes Vikram Vedha and Jersey

Boney Kapoor who has bankrolled some popular remakes spoke on why few remakes become a hit and others fail at the box office

With the rise in Indian Cinema, the Hindi and South film industries are blending. Also, a remake of South movies has been consistent for ages. Many films from the south were and are picked for remake in Hindi. Namely, Drishyam, Kabir Singh, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Baaghi, Singham, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa are a few remakes that have made it big in Bollywood. Film producer Boney Kapoor recently commented on the remake of South films in Bollywood.

In the list of south remakes, the latest and most famous names to add are Jersey and Vikram Vedha. Unfortunately, both films didn’t make the mark and didn’t get desired success. Vikram Vedha – Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan starter, and Jersey starring Shahid Kapoor didn’t perform well at the Hindi belt. Boney Kapoor who has bankrolled some popular remakes such as Judaai, Kyon Ki, and Run spoke on why few remakes become a hit and others fail at the box office.

In an interview with Times Of India, Boney said, “One of the reasons why Hindi remakes of some of the South films aren’t working is because they are simply copy-pasted. Even the titles are kept the same as the original, as in the case of Vikram Vedha and Jersey. Also While remaking South films, one has to add the North Indian nativity to suit the Hindi audience. You have to make a film which will be accepted pan India.”

Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha is a remake of a Tamil film of the same name. Helmed by the same director duo Pushkar-Gayathri the film was released this year in September. The action thriller managed to collect Rs.100 crore worldwide.

Talking about Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey, was a remake of the 2019 Telugu film of the same name. After much delay, the film was finally released on 22nd April 2022. As per reports, the film earned Rs. 27.9 crores at the box office.

Boney Kapoor cited the reason behind remake failure being a simple copy-paste. The film producer has now bankrolled his daughter Janhvi Kapoor’s upcoming film Mili which is also a remake of the Malayalam hit film Helen. Mili is directed by Mathukutty Xavier and will release in theaters on 4th November 2022.
